Understanding the Refrigeration Cycle

A refrigeration system operates through a continuous cycle in which refrigerant circulates between the compressor, condenser, expansion devices and evaporator.

The process begins at the compressor, where low-pressure refrigerant vapour from the evaporator is compressed into a high-pressure, high-temperature gas. The refrigerant then flows towards the condenser, where heat is released to the surrounding environment.

As the refrigerant releases heat, it condenses from a gas into a high-pressure liquid. The liquid refrigerant then passes through components such as the receiver tank, filter drier, solenoid valve and expansion valve, depending on the system design.

At the expansion valve, the refrigerant pressure is reduced. This causes the refrigerant temperature to drop, preparing it to absorb heat inside the cold room.

The cold, low-pressure refrigerant then enters the evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the air inside the cold room. The refrigerant evaporates and returns to the compressor as a low-pressure vapour, completing the refrigeration cycle.

This continuous process allows the refrigeration system to maintain the required temperature inside the cold room.
